he's doing a great job today. he had his music class and learned about clefs and staffs. playing the guitar will help him in that class. he chatted with my mom and dad and told them all about the guitar and even played for them. they wanted to know how he was learning and he said his dad is teaching him. they were surprised and thought it was great! ellen wants to know if she can try that small walmart guitar that was harrison's. he enjoyed his history class. he loved meeting all of the middle school teachers. they were each in their houses and showed the kids their dogs and kids. pretty cool. next is math...algebra. wonder when the calculus comes up...if it doesn't start for awhile i'm going to read the book first and try to be more prepared to help him.

i dunno...but i'm gonna try blogging again.

today marks a huge day for me. i hope the huge days aren't my only blog days. i got rid of credit cards today. harrison helped me by showing me monopoly money and saying, "now you won't be using THIS!" he is a great teacher at his young age. i am terrified of using "cash only" but i have proven to myself that i cannot be trusted to think clearly with a credit card in my back pocket at all times. i already feel freed even though the fear is still huge. my friends and family have all told me that i can do this and i trust them all. thanks everyone!

Thursday 8/26/10 was Harrison's first day of 5th grade. His teacher is Mrs Foisy. He used his ipod for an alarm and put on new clothes. He rode his bike to Pahvant. He said the day was "pretty good" and he told about playing kickball, eating lunch, going to PE, playing with friends at recess, going to an assembly. Then he rode his bike home. He was tired!

Later we went to his second soccer game of the season. He looked great as the goalie. But when he was playing defense he was so into it. He made a great kick/pass. His confidence shot up and he was even more into it. He had a blast.

Then we went to pack meeting where Harrison was awarded the 6 badges he earned over the summer. Half of his soccer team was at pack meeting lol.

24 hours into 5th grade and harrison is sick. he has a fever and is holding a puke bucket. kent is off working and our 300 n is still torn up with major holes and piles of dirt. i love having no traffic. harrison and i got to webcam with alecia and ruthie and get a tour of their awesome new house. kaleigh will be home for the weekend and that will be nice having her here. harrison has a ticket for raging waters this weekend. i hope he gets feeling better soon. the secretary at school said that i was the 8th mother to call in with a sick child and that most kids are feeling sick for 6-24 hours.

Harrison is planning us a family trip. He knows the maximum amount of money we can spend on the trip. He had some destination ideas: Las Vegas, Capitol Reef, St George, Palisade State Park. I gave him the lodging costs in each location and also the mileage to each location. I told him we get about 25 miles per gallon of gas. He immediately began long division using 25 as the divisor and each location's mileage as the dividend. The only question he asked was "how much is 1 gallon of gas?" The boy just has a mathematical brain that is always busy. Oh, his decision is Las Vegas. He is even prepared with a wallet of spending money. What a great kid. This is going to be so much fun.

Harrison's birthday gift this year was a plane ticket to Detroit, MI. Now, Harrison HATES to fly but he is willing to do it if he's with his mom. He's especially willing to fly if the airplane lands at Leash.

We arrived on Ruthie's birthday. What a darling little child she is. She smiled at Harrison from her car seat and the two of them were cousin's in love for the rest of the trip. They played and chased and laughed. We all got to just be together in their nice home because it was too cold to go outside. We loved it.

We even got to sleep in a great guest bedroom with a down comforter and decorations. Fabulous. Justin and Alecia cooked and served the most wonderful, healthy meals. Pulled pork, pesto chicken wraps, meatballs, and a delicious baked oatmeal dish were the highlights.

Thanks for a great trip. We love you Englishes so much.

I remember Harrison's adorable little feet. They were padded and soft. He used to get really achy feet and cry for us to rub them. Ohhh, how he loved a good foot rub. Back then he wasn't a fan of back scratches since they were ticklish but today you can get him to melt with a good back scratch.

When we lived near Houston we had this great house with a pool and guest bedrooms and one of our great guests named it Hotel Pyne. Well, hurricane Ike was a guest yesterday and here's what he had to say...

Today Harrison woke up and said, "I don't have 180 days of school left. I have 179." Nothin like one-day-at-a-time :)

Harrison looked so good for his first day of school yesterday. We walked together to Pahvant - I think it's about 4 blocks. He had some butterflies in the tummy but he was very confident and brave. He even had to watch a violent video of a bus crash. He doesn't like things like that at all and it has affected him a lot. He has been very grown up and has discussed his feelings and thoughts about it with me and Kent. He even called Grandma for some help with it. He was exhausted after his day and came right home and took a 2 hour nap. Later on we were sitting in the hot tub and he could not even believe he had that long of a nap. I am so lucky and proud to be his mom.

Harrison was planning on having a tooth loosened and taken out in these photos. We were both nervous. I had to promise major purchases in Harrison's behalf. Harrison had to stop imagining the worst and try to relax and stay calm. Both of those things are very hard for each of us :)

Anyway, the shot in the gum came first. Harrison was serioulsy braced on the dental chair and a few seconds after the shot when he could tell for sure the shot was over he said to the dentist, "I do not know why but I didn't feel anything!!" And then he got even luckier when the dentist said, "let's not take this tooth out until we get the orthodontist's opinion." So, he only had to have a cavity filled. Easy peasy.

looks to be a new bathroom

Our 70 year old bathroom sink would not quit leaking and the master fixer couldn't get to the solid rusted areas he needed to be able to fix it. So, he was taking the sink off the wall to attempt one more time to get to the rusty areas and the sink CRACKED. The porcelain was SO sharp that Kent just pressed against it and it sliced his arm open. He probably needed stitches but opted for a butterfly bandage.

We had already been shopping for vanities just in case that became our only option. We wanted this very expensive one, of course.

We kept looking.

We found an affordable set that we both liked.

We agreed that this small sink could move to another bathroom someday and we'd get the expensive one that matched better later. But we like it in here now!

Harrison and i did a little math on Tuesday since he wanted to know how many days old he is (then he wanted to know months, hours etc). Anyway we did the calculation and came up with today being his 3000th day. He has done a good job being alive for 3000 days. He has spent many days practicing jiu-jitsu, playing baseball, swimming, swinging, reading, humming, playing trains, building with legos, watching star wars, acting star wars, beating video games, teasing, laughing and loving. Happy 3000th day, kiddo! We love you so much and these 3000 days FLEW by for us.

My little boy always has grey gunk (more commonly known in my family as the perfectly descriptive Spanish word "mugre", pronounced moo-gray) under his fingernails. We are constantly trying to find the best way to clean this mugre out.

Just a few days ago we found this funny old soap container that we've had for several years (a gift from my sister that still cracks me up). We filled it with soap and put it on the bathroom sink.

Harrison must have inspected it closely.

Harrison says, "Mom, what are sins?"
Mom says, "They are mistakes that people make."
Harrison says, "Oh. I thought they were those dirty things under your fingernails."

It was a nice, quiet evening. Dinner was over and cleaned up. I was cleaning up things in the office from the day's work. Harrison was in a hot bubble bath. Calmly, Harrison calls from the bathroom, "Mom, can you come here please?" I say, "Sure, I'll be right there. I'm just closing the blinds." And then I stop on my way to the bathroom to hang up the phone. I get to the bathroom and Harrison's head is poking out.

Before I am allowed to enter the bathroom I must answer this question: "How many mistakes have you made in your life?"

I quickly reply, "Oh, hundreds and hundreds."

He relaxes a bit and the door starts to open. He says, "Oh good cuz I just made the biggest one of my life or at least the second biggest."

I enter the room.

The tub was full to the brim but not overflowing. The rug on the floor is wet on the edges. He says, "I was in there and I thought I had turned the water off. I opened the drain when it started spilling out." And then, SUDDENLY IT SPILLED AGAIN. The water gushed over the top of the tub. The water was still running because with the faucet underwater the poor child couldn't tell which way was off!

I assured Harrison that no matter what mistake he makes in his life, I love him the same and will absolutely help him thru the consequenses.

And then we practiced yelling, "Mom, I have an emergency! I need you right now!!!"

We live just 3 blocks from Ashman Elementary. We have a great time walking to school together. Anyway, we had our second SEP with H's teacher last week. Some of her comments were:

Today Alecia asked me about my favorite moment in 2007. It was so fun to think back thru all the good memories and land on my favorite.

Kent and I took a trip to Texas early in the year and we were gone for a week. When we drove home, Harrison, Grandma and Grandpa were waiting for us in Richfield. My favorite moment was when we parked the truck in front of the house and Harrison came out the front door and RAN towards us. I ran towards him and he jumped around my neck and gave me the best, tightest most genuine hug of my life. Can't think of a better moment at this moment. Thanks for the memory, Harrison. I love you!

a live baby shower with all of our friends and family...Leash is getting a baby shower post. It would be so fun to hang out with you at such an exciting time. We would have loved to shower you with soft, pink, girlie gifts for your little girl. We would even have little pink cakes and dumb diaper games. So, thank goodness for our Internet communications at least (and Babies-R-Us gift registries). You are a wonderful sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, friend, niece and granddaughter. I am working right now and trying to explain something about numbers being right in a row, i.e. 1,2,3,4,5... I knew there was a concise, one-word description for this scenario but I could not think of it. All I could come up with was "simultaneous." All of my people started coming to mind. I was going to call Alecia but I didn't know what time she was presenting thesis. I tried to call Dad but no answer. Kent just left. Britt's at work. Angie is who knows where. Bryce is driving by some mountain that I don't recognize. Mom's in kindergarten. Ally is always busy at work. Curt! Curt won't be at work! I dialed Curt. Surprisingly, he was driving to work but probably only because it's Friday and he will leave really early ;)

Harrison at Cove Fort

This is Harrison's second grade field trip. He got on the bus with his class. Kent packed them a lunch and drove the truck 30 miles from Richfield to Cove Fort. Then they got to spend the day together learning some history. The weather is ideal today - about 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Kent loved seeing the tools at the blacksmith shop. Harrison loved walking around with Tyson and watching the movie. I wish I could have been with them.

Our front yard had so much fun with two kids running around and big-wheeling and bicycling (YEAH! on two wheels!). Kent was working away on Truck the Third and the children helped right along with wrenches and scrub rags. Oh how we will miss you, sweet summer. Today Harrison was telling me about animals that hibernate in winter. He mentioned bears and then he said some humans even do it. Oh, I'm with that crowd for sure and Harrison laughed about having a hibernating mother. He claims to love the cold. He gets a real kick out of being the opposite of me, which in fact, makes him closer to the same as me. Muahahahaha. There is more for him to learn. ;)

I've been looking to replace the, ahem, king-sized top sheet and blanket on Harrison's bed. Finally, we found something we agreed on! He had fun curling up in a comfy new bed. And with a neckroll pillow! First time I've had the guts to splurge on a thing like that. That was fun. He's the best little kid.

We had a great holiday weekend with all three of our children. We went up the Cottonwood Canyon to our old "hot dog spot" to shoot some targets with 22's. Harrison was unwilling to get there on a three-wheeler so we drove the truck with him and Kaleigh, Kwinton and I rode three-wheelers. The day was beautifully sunshiny with an ideal temperature. We relaxed, competed, hiked and laughed.

My Grandpa stayed with us last week. He likes to eat Shredded Wheat cereal so we bought some. One morning I was having some and Harrison decided to try a bite.

He chewed and chewed and chewed and cogitated as he chewed.

When he was finally able to speak again, he said to me with a furrowed brow, "I feel like I just ate sticks!?"

Harrison got a "buzz cut" from Grandma this week. Every day he has some comment about how his Hair is missing. Today's comment was, "I am really freaked out without my Hair!"

Truck the Third

Now, Kent has his 2005 Dodge Ram and his Crap 1000. As if he needed another, he walked across the street tonight and came home with Truck the Third. It is a 1960 GMC. This truck has lived on 450 W Street in Richfield with no humans for the last 25 years. It finally came out for air and Kent walked by......

He got it running! Kent has had a permagrin since. Grandma says he's like a kid with a new toy. He even dreamed of being in a parade driving it! lol

Oh! and see that voluptuous bush in front of the truck? That's the bush that I rode my bike straight into when I was about 7. After that experience I learned to look where I want my bike to go, NOT where I DON'T want it to go! Always learning the hard way...

Grandpa got a bass box in the mail yesterday. Wow, was it exciting. ;)

Harrison quickly thought of how easily that box could be a pirate ship or a castle. He settled for the easiest option and turned it into a pitched-roof house. He played in it for 3 hours and even had a 6-year-old visitor during that time.

Grandma (who just bought the beautiful playground above) says, "Who needs a $1200 playground when you can get a box!"

Maybe Grandma Di won't look at my blog ;) She will be mad at us. But yesterday it was really windy and the baby birds that are nested on the back patio blew out of their nest! So, Kent picked them up to put them back but just had to show Harrison and me. So cool.

treasure box filler

last weekend, my niece, ellen, gave me a sweet gift to keep in my treasure box forever. here's the preface:

ellen doesn't speak very well yet. she jabbers. it sounds like she is rambling off complex sentences, but it's all in her own made-up language. once in awhile you can understand english words from her. for example, she fell down on the sidewalk last weekend at grandma's house. grandma and i were walking behind her. after she fell, she looked up at us and said "are you ok?" and then began to cry. point is, it's a very exciting time in her life as she learns to communicate with words.

here's the story:

angie put ellen and harrison to bed one night. they had a "sleepover" with sleeping bags. i peeked in to check on them and ellen had climbed out of her sleeping bag and was headed right for harrison. in a serious whisper i said, "ellen, get back in your bed." it scared her to get caught getting out of bed so she started whimpering and heading back to her bed. she laid down and looked up at me with big, pleading brown eyes and said, "Help Maimee!" I immediately went to lay down by the little angel. ;)

ultimate treasures

Yesterday Kent had a very busy and long day. He came home at bedtime and sat on the couch to relax for a bit. So, Harrison and I got in bed to read stories (we've almost finished "Peter and the Starcatchers"). Anyway, I got a special treat after reading. Back when Harrison was 1 1/2 thru 5 years old and we would lie down to sleep, he would wrap his little arms around me and we would hold on to each other. Harrison is now 7 and that hasn't happened for many, many months. I figured it was a done deal. But he did it again last night! Don't ever tell Harrison this story!! He can read now, but I'm hoping he can't web browse for a few more years. ;)

just monday

it's just a day. nothing to blog about. but i am reminded that i don't have to have something major in order to blog. i love the usual days in my life. they are the most dear to me so they deserve some attention.

harrison's feet got achy during the night. he woke me up at 2am asking for some ibuprofen. he got himself some water while i opened the child-proof container. he's so grown up. and then this morning at 7:05 when his alarm went off he said my most favorite line -- "you can lay by me if you want." -- it takes me back to the days when he'd say "you can hold me if you want." oh, i want.

kent is working right now. he has three jobs to do today. my favorite part is when he comes home (and it's usually NOT 8 hours later!!) i am so excited that this business is working out so well. kent is very good at what he does and the customers are happy and calling for more help and even referring other people. what a dream.

everyday we miss kaleigh and kwinton.

i'm listening to hinder because it reminds me of kent :)

bedtime stories

Ellen came to stay for a few days while her parents took a much needed vacation from school and work.

I "forced" El to take two naps a day and go to bed early...

First nap: El glared and scowled and hit. She'd hit me and say "DON'T" and "NO!" I tried to lay her down and cover her up and hug her. She kicked the covers off. She sat stubbornly, frowning. I pretended to be sleepy-eyed and she continued to sit. Her eyes would droop. Finally, she fell asleep sitting up and tipped over!!

Bedtime with Harrison: The three of us got in Harrison's king-sized bed. Harrison took his usual side. His stuffed dog friends occupied the middle of the bed as usual. Ellen and Aimee took the other side. We read a story about Dumbo. Ellen got teary when the story was over and the lights went out. Pretty soon Harrison was scooting the dogs to his side of the bed and he was sliding over by Ellen. He slipped his arm around her and said "I love you" in a whisper. Soon the three of us were on about 1/4 of the king-sized bed, happy and sleeping.

The last nap: El laid down on the pillow, grabbed the covers and pulled them up to her chin. She kissed the stuffed bear good night and then she kissed me.

Ellen loves to go outside. We were in grandma's house today after lunch. I walked towards the front door and said "Do you want to go outside?" Ellen came running towards me and planted a big kiss right on my leg and continued running to the door.

I am absolutely positive that the temperature at 84701 was above freezing today. I smiled. I walked. Outside. This hasn't happened for months. I have had a successful winter so far this year. No major bouts of depression. No serious weight gain. I'm sure this has a lot to do with my fabulous family. My kids are adorable, my hubby is perfectly attentive and loving and so much fun to hang with. And after today, I feel sure I can make it to May. I have had visions of 4-square balls, tennis tournaments with 7-kids, my husband in shorts and t-shirts and FLIP FLOPS!!

I actually got a tad too warm in my shirts, jackets and coats. The ground is softer somehow. I adore sunshine.

Aunt Carol told me about this old game called Jotto. She played it with friends.

It is a word game. It requires a decent vocabulary and logic.

Aunt Janice googled it and found the best link for it. (Click on Jotto above to see it)

Brittany just learned to play it with me. We loved it! She won.

Leash and Justin will love it as well.

Dad will play it with me eventually.

The best part is that all you need are a pencil and piece of paper! No game store necessary.

Invisible Force Fields are ONLY FOR MOVIES

Harrison had a special time set aside for him during his class. The time was for Teach & Tell. Harrison's chosen topic was magnets. He got a new magnet set a couple of weeks ago and has had fun doing experiments and just playing with them. While teaching Harrison about the magnets, I told him about the invisible force field which exists around all magnets. Well, apparently some movie has put it in Harrison's mind that invisible force fields are only allowed in science fiction!

Harrison said, "I won't say that magnets have an invisible force field." He watched me prove the force field. He proved the force field himself. But, he says his fellow students won't buy that.

His magnets are strong enough that if you lay one magnet on top of a six-kid's outstretched hand, and then put the other magnet underneath that outstretched hand, you can flip the top magnet. You can also feel the force field. Come visit Harrison and he will show you.

So, he did the experiment on each child's hand and told them about the north and south poles of magnets. He even got the trick to work on his teacher's hand and she loved it.
