January is named for Janus, the god of doors and gateways in Roman mythology.
King Numa Pompilius added January and February to the Roman calendar around 700 BC. January originally had 30 days. The addition of these months made the year 364 days long. The Romans had a superstition against even numbers so Julius Caesar added one day to January in 46 BC. He also made January the first month rather than the eleventh. This became known as the Julian Calendar.
January's gem is the garnet for constancy.
January's flower is the snowdrop or carnation.
"The blast of January would blow you through and through." --William Shakespeare
